Perhaps the most significant benefit of introducing a wellness program in a workplace is improving both the physical health and mental health of employees by helping them adopt good health behaviours and reduce health risks. Doing so can help employees to reduce the risk of health problems and prevent chronic diseases.
Studies show that employees are more likely to be on the job and performing well when they are in optimal health. Benefits of implementing a wellness program include: improved disease management and prevention, and a healthier workforce in general, both of which contribute to lower health care costs.
When employees are healthy and stress-free, they are less likely to be absent from work. Such employees are likely to be more invested in their work and be more productive in general. Moreover, when employee productivity and morale are high, employees are motivated to work and perform well.
Poor employee productivity can be defined as physically being at work but not working. This type of poor productivity is called Presenteeism. It is estimated that the cost associated with presenteeism due to poor employee health is at least 2 to 3 times greater than direct health care expenses. While the estimated cost of Presenteeism dwarfs the cost of health care, it does not receive the same level of scrutiny among employers preoccupied with controlling the direct costs of poor employee health.
Thankfully, wellness programs can help solve Presenteeism, and improve employee health and productivity.
